Contemporary Trends in Laparoscopic Urology
Edited by A.K. Hemal
Publisher: B.I. Churchill Livingstone, New Delhi,
INDIA
"Contemporary Trends In Laparoscopic Urology" edited by Dr. A.K. Hemal is well organised and comprehensive, covering history and evolution of laparoscopic urology, basic principles and established procedures besides giving an overview of frontier areas like robotics and microlaparoscopy. The authors are drawn from institutions in different countries well known for their work in laparoscopic urology. This is a field where Indian urologists have made substantial original contributions. This is reflected in the book where Indian authors have written many chapters. The authors have provided an in-depth view of different aspects of laparoscopic urology incorporating the most recent developments. Specific procedures are described in a manner that is easy to understand. The language is simple and easy to read. A commendable feature of the book is the description of cost-effective methods in laparoscopic urologic procedures, which are particularly relevant to our country.
The book, however, has some shortcomings. One wonders if laparoscopic radical cystectomy can be called an established procedure in the present day. It might have been better included in the section on "future perspectives". Furthermore, there is a chapter on laparoscopy in the management of stress urinary incontinence although its role at present is very little. A few diagrams and photographs would have helped in better understanding of the subject in some chapters. Although there are many very good quality illustrations (especially in chapters 18, 27 and 35) some of the photographs could have been better.
On the whole this book presents an authoritative and balanced view on the subject and would be very useful to students of urology and practising urologists, especially those with a special interest in the field of laparoscopic urology.
